Cosmetic dates: read the pack and record when you open it

A lipstick bought last month and a cream opened last year do not share the same timeline just because they sit in the same makeup bag. For Avon products or other cosmetics, start with the information on the exact pack you own. A catalogue's campaign dates describe an offer, not how long a cosmetic lasts after opening.

Keep three kinds of information separate

Cosmetics Europe explains the open-jar symbol used for a period after opening, often shortened to PAO. A number followed by M indicates months after first use: an illustrative 6M means six months, not June and not six uses. This is different from a printed minimum-durability date. A batch identifier has a separate role and should not be read as an expiry date unless the manufacturer explains that format.

Not every cosmetic carries an open-jar symbol. Do not invent a PAO when none is printed, or transfer one from another product with similar packaging. The explanation from Cosmetics Europe describes European labelling; it does not establish a Philippine legal requirement or the instructions for every Avon product sold locally.

A simple record for your own makeup bag

When opening a product, take a readable photograph of its label and make one short entry. Our suggested fields are product name and variant, the printed date or PAO exactly as shown, the date first opened, the batch identifier and any storage instructions. Keep these as separate fields. A purchase receipt can help identify the item, but its date is not automatically your opening date.

For example, imagine a pack marked 6M first opened on 22 October 2026. A six-month reminder falls on 22 April 2027. This is an invented record-keeping example, not a claim that any particular Avon cosmetic has a six-month PAO. The reminder does not override a printed expiry date, a shorter instruction or a reason to stop using the product earlier.

Use a small label that does not cover the original batch, date or directions, or keep the record on your phone. If you cannot remember when an older product was opened, write "opening date unknown" rather than giving it today's date and starting the clock again. An honest gap is more useful than a precise but invented date.

A date is not a condition test

The US FDA explains that storage and use affect cosmetic shelf life: heat, moisture, light and air can change a product. Keep lids closed and follow the pack's storage advice. Do not share cosmetics or add water or saliva to revive dried mascara. A calendar reminder cannot confirm that a product is still suitable to use.

If the label is illegible, the dates are ambiguous, or the product has changed in smell, texture or appearance, set it aside and ask the manufacturer for guidance. Looking unchanged is not proof of safety either. Send a clear pack photograph and the batch identifier through the manufacturer's official channel instead of guessing from a third-party batch-code calculator. This article does not diagnose skin reactions or give a universal replacement schedule.

When choosing your next cosmetic

Before opening several similar products, consider which one you are actually ready to use. Keep unopened and opened items distinguishable, and retain the carton if it carries information absent from the container. When comparing a catalogue listing with a product at home, match the name, variant and pack size first; do not assume a newer brochure changes the instructions on an older pack.

Pack says 6M: Example only: read YOUR pack; Opened 22 Oct 2026: Record the first opening; 22 Apr 2027: Reminder, not a safety test
An original record-keeping example. Six months is illustrative, not an Avon product instruction.
